Objective, "Avoiding rapid R&D of weapons & various disruptions of social and economic structures"? by Martin Coppa 00:08, 7 Dec 2004 (CST)
It is the goal of CRN's proposal, "to encourage the development of a primitive molecular manufacturing capability. We believe this is the responsible thing to do. The machine we describe would not be capable of making weapons or other disruptive products. What it would do is serve as a proof of principle and stimulate discussion." Development of a polymer system shows direct proof that the manufacturing is feasible while delaying the full impacts. Would'nt it also cause nearly the same problem facing diamondoid MM? Would'nt this "proof" also incite world leaders to abandon all long term projects in favor of their own MM projects simply due to the military consequences of being the first to own a high performance MM capability (or !!!inconceivably!!! last). You might as well go for the gusto and develop diamondoid MM - as soon as there is proof, others will certainly deploy immense resources, and not necessarily into the "discussion" of its implications. With the development of a polymer MM, you may lose the possibility of controlling the original fully functional, high performance, nanofactory.
