I think the current definition of 'pace' is a bit of a handwaving approach. 'Reaching conclusion' or 'achieving success' are very vague and not good, hard targets to aim for.

I'd suggest, in its place, a list of potential nanotechnologicial goals. This list might include single-element-nanotech self replication, <50% failure rate per fully automated self replication process, multiple-element nanotech, winner announced for Feynman prize, and/or other similar firm, technically possible and falsifiable events.
