Development Mode: Multiple Open Global Cooperative Private Gradual

While other modes of development - particularly government backed - will certainly exist, it may be important to have an "amateur" development program or programs. These will generally be open to all and global in the sense of heavily relying on the internet for communications.

Goals

  • Channel enthusiasm to action
  • Spread technical knowledge and advances
  • Innovation "on the cheap"
  • <<<other value??>>>

Implications

  • Reduced chance of highly concentrated control over molecular manufacturing
    • Equalizer effect - all have more power
  • Some increase to large-scale nanotech dangers (compared to tightly restricted molecular manufacturing)
    • Irresponsible hobbyists could create dangers "for fun"
    • Technically competent but truly insane individuals might aim to cause damage
    • Easier access early on for criminals, terrorists, revolutionaries, etc

Projects

  • <<<list??>>>

The largest issue seems to be how such projects can get beyond the "nothing but talk" point, and proceed to making actual accomplishments. A few individuals have proven themselves capable of making significant achievements - designing and building their own AFM for example - but most people who are interested lack the skills and knowledge to even get started on a real project.

Perhaps the PC industry can serve as a role model - though that only got started aftercheap microprocessors were commercially available.

Some ideas:

  • Broaden the base - "Personal Manufacturing" - with nanotech the ultimate goal
  • Leverage PC capabilities - 3D design, control of devices
  • Leverage the few individuals who've accompished things
    • E.g. enable them to sell 'kits', as in early PC days
  • Need enthusiast magazines
    • Web makes it too easy, too cheap - degrades perceived monetary value to zero
    • Suggestion: Short web articles, with inexpensive "in detail" articles
    • Suggestion: Use a "running tab - honor system with email dunning" system for payment
      • Minimizes barrier for getting people to sign up to see detailed articles
