"Nanotechnology" encompasses many fields. For most purposes, these can be divided into two categories: nanoscale technology and molecular manufacturing.

Nanoscale technology is what most of today's researchers are working on. Some defining characteristics are:

  • Stuff too small to see with a light microscope (Richard Jones)
  • Things smaller than 100 nanometers in at least one dimension (National Nanotechnology Initiative)
  • Anything small that you can write a grant for (anonymous cynic)

Nanoscale technology generally produces simple stuff: materials and components, not products. It's built in one of two ways: Bulk processes and top-down manufacturing.

Molecular manufacturing is mostly theoretical today. Its proponents have done high-level theory work that implies extremely cheap fast manufacturing of high-performance products. So far, no one has shown that it can't work as claimed. Lack of detailed engineering plans leaves room for skepticism.
