A runaway system is one that consumes too much, grows rapidly, and can't easily be shut off.

At least two kinds of nano-related runaway systems have been hypothesized. Gray goo appears to be less of a concern than was previously thought. Self-improving artificial intelligence is not well understood, but may be a significant risk.
