Most nucleic acid work is not directed toward molecular manufacturing. However, the development of actuators and other programmable machines can be seen as the first steps toward mechanical control of chemistry and molecular configuration. See for example work at MIT's Center for Bits and Atoms: "If [three one-year goals] can both be accomplished next year, a final (ambitious) goal is: Demonstrate feedback control of programmed molecular assembly using real-time electronic detection"
