Nanoparticles come in many useful kinds. One kind self-assembles from smaller molecules in solution; this can produce small fatty bubbles. Another kind can be made by condensing metals from vapor. Ceramic nanoparticles also exist and may be formed simply by grinding. Diesel exhaust and even natural dirt contain nanoparticles.

Some nanoparticles glow in specific useful colors; some are transparent yet absorb ultraviolet light; some are excellent catalysts; some have medicinal properties; some are toxic to varying degrees; some transport other substances. A major focus of research is how to predict the activity of nanoparticles.
