Self-assembly is when randomly colliding molecules join up in certain useful patterns. A single uniform layer of molecules may self-assemble on a surface. Two molecules may join together, like an enzyme and its reactant or an antibody and its target. Nucleic acid chains can join in quite complex shapes that can be engineered. Because the molecules are not individually manipulated, but are controlled by their pre-built characteristics, this is a bulk technology.
